b. 1985 - Riverside, CA, USA.
Natalie Dunham currently lives and works in Miami, FL. Her current series entitled paint the roses [RED] is an exploration of artifice, or “ways of covering.” Drawing inspiration from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, these minimal installations ask the question: What happens when we rely on surface interaction and alteration? For these works Dunham strips materials down to a raw, natural state in order to reveal what is honest and uncomplicated about them. She then covers the forms with paint, creating a visual and psychological tension between surface and depth. The series hopes to illustrate that “painting the (roses) red” is a temporary solution and that the true “color” of things will always reveal itself. Natalie received her BFA in painting from Birmingham-Southern College, and her MFA in sculpture from the Rinehart School of Sculpture at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA).
