Emma Balder’s practice explores the process of transformation and regeneration through recontextualizing wasted textiles. By reconstructing disparate, often previously deteriorated parts, Balder’s work unveils beauty in the discarded. Color, form, and organic contours harmonize to shape a new reality for this cultural compost. A labor of love, Balder carefully manipulates the fibers along the substrate, creating an intimate collaboration with her material. By focusing on the miniscule and most often forgotten, Balder breathes new life into neglected material, referencing a universal experience of human transformation. Since receiving a BFA in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2012, Emma’s unique work has received increasing recognition worldwide. She was named a finalist of the Peripheral Vision Arts Fellowship and was awarded a Staff Artist Fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center in 2014. Balder has exhibited internationally and nationwide, and her works are included in both private and public collections including the Dave Bown Projects.
